Cincy Zoo gorilla to become first-time mom at 30

The big picture: Cincinnati Zoo is no stranger to gorilla births. It participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan, which carefully matches gorillas based on genetics to help sustain the North American population.

• The zoo also supports conservation efforts in the Republic of the Congo through research, education and community partnerships that protect gorillas in the wild.

Zoom in: Chewie's pregnancy is part of that plan — she's due in February or March.

• The AZA recommended Chewie and silverback Mbeli for breeding based on their genetic value to the population, Zoo spokesperson Michelle Curley tells Axios.
• Mbeli is also the father of Gorilla World's youngest resident, Mboka Jo.

The backstory: While this is Chewie's first pregnancy, she's spent years preparing for the role.

• The longtime resident has helped welcome new troop members and cared for younger gorillas, like Mboka Jo.
• Chewie even stepped into a leadership role after the loss of silverback Jomo, helping steady the troop until Mbeli arrived.

What they're saying: "She's been sweet and caring with other babies. That's encouraging," Curley says. "But you never really know how a first-time mom will react when her baby arrives."

• "We're thrilled to welcome another baby, and it'll be great for Mboka Jo to have a young playmate."
