For years, the Western Hills Viaduct replacement has mostly lived in renderings, funding announcements and planning documents.
Why it matters: That's about to change as construction ramps up toward building the replacement viaduct next year.
- The Brent Spence Bridge corridor and Fort Washington Way caps have dominated Cincinnati's infrastructure headlines lately, but this is the project for West Siders to watch.
State of play: Early construction is underway, and project manager Brandon Lecrone says it remains on schedule and on budget.
- "The project has evolved over the past few years, but generally speaking, having construction underway is in line with where we expected to be at this point."
- The biggest traffic change comes early next year, when the viaduct ramp to southbound I-75 will close until the replacement bridge opens.

- When city leaders announced the project's funding in 2022, construction was expected to begin in 2025 and wrap up in 2030.
- Rising labor and material costs later forced a redesign, shrinking the bridge from eight traffic lanes to six while preserving pedestrian, bicycle and safety improvements. The project is now expected to finish in December 2031.
Despite those high-profile incidents, city officials have consistently maintained that the bridge is safe through routine inspections, maintenance and weight restrictions while crews work toward replacing it.
