Boulder County voters back expanding commission

By the numbers: The expansion had 65.64% support (74,676 votes), compared with 34.36% opposed (39,098 votes) as of results at 1am Wednesday.

• Voters narrowly favored a hybrid system, with three commissioners elected by district and two countywide, 52.43% (55,623 votes) to 47.57% (50,463 votes).

• The alternative would elect all five commissioners by district.

State of play: Boulder County is currently divided into three districts — north, south and east. While candidates must live in the district they aim to represent, the three commissioners are all elected by at-large votes.

Catch up quick: The citizen-led measure was spearheaded by Big Tent Boulder County, which argued that a larger board would improve representation and prevent individual commissioners from wielding too much influence.

• Opponents, including two of the three sitting commissioners, raised concerns about additional costs and slower decision-making.
• Efforts to expand the board have failed multiple times, as far back as the 1970s and as recently as 2018.

What's next: A redistricting commission will convene in 2027 to draw new districts before voters elect two additional commissioners in November 2028.

• The five-member board will take office in January 2029.

The bottom line: Boulder County voters delivered a clear mandate for expanding the commission, but the narrower vote on how to elect its members shows residents remain divided over the best way to ensure fair representation.
