1-minute voter guide: What to know about Proposition 133 on the Colorado ballot

How it works: A "yes" vote would:

• Require life in prison without parole for anyone convicted of trafficking a minor for sexual activity.

• Expand the crime to include knowingly buying or selling sexual activity involving a minor in exchange for anything of monetary value.

Context: Child sex trafficking is already a felony in Colorado, punishable by eight to 48 years in prison, followed by five years of mandatory parole.

Between the lines: Supporters say tougher life sentences would deter trafficking and protect children.

• Opponents argue harsher sentences are unlikely to prevent the crime and could discourage victims coerced into criminal activity from cooperating with investigators.

The fine print: State analysts estimate additional prison costs would begin around 2041, as people serve longer sentences than they would under current law.
