1-minute voter guide: Proposition 132 on the Colorado ballot

How it works: A "yes" vote on Proposition 132 would:

• Make possession of any amount of fentanyl a felony, though charges involving less than one gram could be reduced after completing mandatory treatment.
• Require eight to 32 years in prison for distributing any amount of fentanyl.
• Eliminate certain sentencing reductions and limit judges' discretion.

Context: Under current law, possessing less than one gram of fentanyl is typically a misdemeanor, while penalties for distribution depend on the quantity involved.

Between the lines: Supporters argue tougher penalties would deter drug crimes and save lives. Opponents say mandatory sentences could discourage people from seeking treatment or reporting overdoses.

By the numbers: State analysts estimate the measure would increase annual spending by $68.2 million by its fifth year, largely because of increased incarceration costs.
