1-minute voter guide: Amendment 81 on the Colorado ballot

How it works: A "yes" vote would require law enforcement to notify the Department of Homeland Security within 72 hours when someone whose legal immigration status can't be confirmed is charged with:

• A violent crime.
• Any crime, even a misdemeanor, if they have a prior felony conviction.

Context: Colorado allows police to cooperate with federal criminal investigations but limits their role in civil immigration enforcement.

Between the lines: Supporters say the measure would improve public safety and create consistent statewide rules.

• Opponents warn it could undermine due process and discourage immigrant communities from cooperating with police.

The fine print: Because Amendment 81 would change the state Constitution, it needs 55% voter approval to pass.
