Boulder sports bars face opening delays

State of play: BuffHouse, the upscale CU-themed sports bar taking over the former Harpo's and Ralphie's building at 2860 Arapahoe Ave., is targeting a November opening after originally aiming for August or September.

• Co-owner Joe Manzanares tells us the project was pushed back after the team decided to expand the building's outdated bathrooms and add a pizza oven.

• Those changes required additional architectural and engineering work, and Manzanares says plans were submitted to the city for permitting last week.

"We wanted to make sure that being the official partner with CU that we did it right the first time," Manzanares said. "It will be worth the wait."

Meanwhile: The Dark Horse's planned resurrection in Louisville has gone quiet.

• When the beloved Boulder bar closed after 51 years in March, its operators told us they planned to reopen near U.S. 36 and McCaslin Boulevard in time for football season.
• That deadline has come and gone.
• The Dark Horse hasn't responded to Axios' recent requests for comment or posted a social media update about the project since the spring.
• Its website still simply says the bar is closed.

What's next: BuffHouse's November target means Boulder could get a dedicated sports bar before the football season ends.

• When — or whether — the Dark Horse rides again remains unclear.
