Wallach abruptly resigns from Boulder City Council

Boulder City Councilmember Mark Wallach's sudden resignation Thursday night will leave his seat vacant until November, turning an already consequential election into an even bigger shakeup.
Why it matters: More than half of City Council will effectively be on the ballot this fall, giving voters an unusually big say in the city's next chapter.
- Depending on the results, Boulder could have anywhere from one to six new members in 2027, when the body sets its next slate of priorities.
Driving the news: Wallach resigned in protest Thursday night after an 8–1 vote allowing the city to pursue Federal Aviation Administration grants for Boulder Municipal Airport, a move that makes it far more difficult to close the airport.
- Wallach was the lone "no" vote, and after the final tally, announced his resignation, effective immediately.
"Simply being a recorded vote in opposition does not suffice," said Wallach, a longtime proponent of using the airport land for additional, much-needed housing.
Between the lines: Because he resigned before Aug. 1, city charter requires the seat remain vacant until the Nov. 3 general election, city spokesperson Sarah Huntley confirmed Friday.
What they're saying: "To steal the signoff of the late journalist Edward R. Murrow: Good night and good luck. See you all down the road. First round is on me," Wallach said.
Context: Wallach, 73, was serving his third term after being reelected last year.
- Endorsed by PLAN-Boulder County, Wallach was part of the council's "conservative" slow-growth bloc.
- He often sided with business interests while championing public safety and fire mitigation.
The bottom line: Wallach's departure adds another open seat to a race that was poised to remake council, raising the possibility of one of the body's biggest turnovers in years.
