Polis signs bills to expand college access

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis headed to CU Boulder this week to sign a package of higher education bills aimed at making college more accessible and affordable for students across the state.

Why it matters: The measures expand opportunities for high schoolers to earn college credit, help lower the cost of course materials and create new ways to recognize colleges and universities that are advancing state priorities.

Driving the news: Polis signed HB26-1078, known as "Off-Campus Courses and Concurrent Enrollment Programs," a CU-backed bill that broadens access to off-campus courses and concurrent enrollment opportunities.

He also signed HB26-1006, which establishes a new "thriving institution" designation for higher education institutions that meet state-defined goals in graduation and credential completion rates, student retention, successful transfers and workforce outcomes.

Meanwhile, HB26-1016 extends Colorado's Open Educational Resources Program to help reduce textbook and course material costs for students.
