Two new bagel shops are moving to Boulder, adding fresh competition to the city's already crowded breakfast sandwich scene.
The big picture: Boulder residents can spread their breakfast love across a variety of local and chain spots.
Driving the news: Nederland's Decent Bagel will expand with a second location in east Boulder that's under construction at the Weathervane apartment complex near 55th and Arapahoe.
- Co-owner Audrey Fritschel told us they hope to be open by the end of June.
- Decent Bagel takes inspiration from the traditional New York City shop, with a few breakfast options alongside standard lox offerings. They also offer focaccia sandwiches.
Fritschel's optimistic her company isn't done adding locations, saying: "We're excited to be building this Boulder location to support our growth across the Front Range over the next couple of years."
Zoom out: Call Your Mother, a Washington, D.C.-based bagel business, has expanded aggressively throughout Colorado since 2023, and opened its first Boulder location last fall on the Twenty Ninth Street Mall.
- Call Your Mother describes itself as a "Jew-ish" fast-casual spot serving New York–Montreal-style bagels.
- It offers a wide variety of fillings, including plenty of vegetarian options to suit Boulderites' tastes.
Reality check: Both locations will have stiff competition in Boulder.
- Call Your Mother in particular sits in a bagel-rich environment, with Einstein Bros. Bagels, Woodgrain Bagels and Moe's Broadway Bagel all within a mile radius.
- Meanwhile, Fleishman's Bagels and Delicatessen food truck is parked in east Boulder, while Big Daddy's Bagels and a second Einstein Bros. are on Baseline Road.
đź’ My thought bubble: I got the Sun City at Call Your Mother, a breakfast bagel with hot honey, because every trendy eatery is now required to offer hot honey.
- I stuck with the morning meal theme at Decent Bagel with the Jakey Boy. The hashbrowns and fry sauce helped this sandwich stand out.
- But my favorite bagel spot remains Moe's because of its variety of schmears and flavors. The turkey with bacon and scallion cream cheese on an onion bagel was my go-to while I worked at the Camera, probably to the disgust of my coworkers.
