Boulder gets a new unofficial flag

The latest: The winning design, called Flatiron Sunrise Flourish, was submitted by Michael Stuart Trimmer and chosen by a review panel.

• The flag has red for the Flatirons, yellow for Boulder's 300(ish) days of sunshine and blue for the sky, according to a release. It is a simplified version of Trimmer's original submission.
• Trimmer's design was one of 10 finalists from professional designers, students, artists and community members, all of which will be on display at the museum.

My thought bubble: Not going to lie, the first thing I saw when I looked at this was the Grateful Dead logo. Which for Boulder I guess is a feature, not a bug.

• Personally, anytime logos or flags come up, I pitch finding a way to include Falling Bear.

What they're saying: "This is an opportunity for dialogue about Boulder's identity, heritage, and history," said Emily Zinn, the Museum of Boulder's deputy director for community engagement.

Flashback: Boulder has long flirted with the idea of a city flag, but never got around to officially designing one.

• A green version was reportedly selected in 1987 before the city just sort of forgot about it.

What's next: Swag featuring the new design will be on sale starting Memorial Day weekend.
