A man allegedly stole a fire engine minutes after being released from jail and led officers on a chase to Longmont early yesterday morning, according to authorities.
The latest:Police said a 33-year-old man was being released from the Boulder County Jail on a trespassing-related call around 3am. At the same time, Boulder Fire-Rescue crews had arrived at the jail for an unrelated medical call.
Officers said the man entered a fire engine and drove off, leading deputies on a pursuit from Boulder to Longmont.
Law enforcement used stop sticks to disable the vehicle, and the driver was arrested after a short foot chase in downtown Longmont, authorities said.
One Boulder County sheriff's deputy sustained minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
The truck, one of Boulder's new electric fire engines, was "significantly damaged," according to police, and three other police vehicles were also damaged during the chase.
No damage estimates have been released.
The suspect was rebooked into the jail and is facing new counts that could include felony auto theft and vehicular eluding.
