Nichole Sterling narrowly defeated incumbent Billy Giblin in Nederland's mayoral race after a recount this week finalized the result.
Why it matters: Sterling will lead a small mountain town facing big decisions on public safety and economic growth.
The latest: She received 261 votes to Giblin's 258, Nederland town manager Jonathan Cain said Tuesday.
Zoom in: The race was tight from the start. The initial April 7 results had Giblin ahead by a single vote.
- Counting overseas and cured ballots flipped the lead to Sterling, triggering the automatic recount.
What they're saying: "In a close election, unofficial totals, post-election totals, and certified recount totals may differ as the statutory process is completed and the final canvass is reconciled," Cain said.
- Neither Sterling nor Giblin could be reached for comment.
Between the lines: Sterling campaigned on "public safety, infrastructure, modern governance, economic development and housing affordability."
- She also touted her leadership in helping the town acquire the Eldora ski area.
- Sterling is the CEO and founder of My Town AI, a company that helps local governments use AI.
What we're watching: The new mayor must navigate several major issues, including a possible rethink of Nederland's decision to shutter its police department and rely on the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.
- She will also have to help steer the future of Eldora after a rough season.
- Meanwhile, crews just started clearing away debris from the Caribou Village fire as the town eyes a rebuild.
- Other projects underway include an expanded child care center and a new nature center.
