Return of the froshpeople: CU move-in day is here

By the numbers: CU Boulder's incoming class will include nearly 8,000 new students, the school tells us.

• An enrollment increase of 2.7% is predicted overall, mostly due to record student retention rates, the Daily Camera reports.

What to expect: Move-in for students participating in pre-arrival programs begins Friday, while international students will move in on Saturday. First-year and returning students will arrive on campus Sunday through next Tuesday.

• Residents should plan for increased traffic on U.S. 36 and Foothills Parkway coming into the city. Baseline Road, Broadway and Arapahoe Avenue are also expected to be busier than normal.
• Drivers should be on the lookout for increased pedestrian, bike and scooter activity ... and skateboards, longboards, hoverboards, electric unicycles (whatever the kids are riding these days.)

Between the lines: Parking will be tight on campus and in student-heavy areas like University Hill.

• Grocery stores and retailers near campus will see higher foot traffic.

What they're saying: "The beginning of the semester is always so invigorating," CU Boulder chancellor Justin Schwartz told Axios Boulder. "You just see the excitement in their faces ... It's Day One of the next big phase of these kids' lives."

• Schwartz said it's exciting to think the next astronaut or Big Tech CEO could be hugging their parents and carrying their bean bag chair to the dorms this week: "It all starts on move-in day."

What's next: The first day of class for CU is Aug. 21.
