North Boulder's 12U All-Stars are chasing history — again — with a shot at the Little League World Series.
Why it matters: No team from Colorado has made it to Williamsport, and North Boulder is trying to break that streak.
Driving the news: North Boulder won the state title last month and will compete with four other teams in the double-elimination Mountain Region tournament in San Bernardino, California, starting this weekend.
- One team from the region will advance to the Little League World Series.
Flashback: North Boulder made it to the regional tournament in 2024 as well, going 1-2.
- One player, Grant Evans, played on that team as an 11-year-old and returns this year.
Zoom in: Manager Kirk Fronckiewicz told Axios Boulder he doesn't think the players feel the pressure to break Colorado's drought in the Little League World Series.
- "We want to do our best and when we reflect on the summer, be able to affirmatively answer the question, 'Did you give everything you could to help the team?'" he said.
Between the lines: Boulder County officials this year announced plans to sell the North Broadway Complex, which includes Iris Fields, home of North Boulder Little League.
- Yes, but: A petition was started asking the city and county to ensure the fields are preserved for baseball use.
What they're saying: Fronckiewicz explained that the chance to go to Williamsport is a dream for young baseball players and a great event for fans.
- "These are 11- and 12-year-old kids simply playing because of the joy for the game," he added.
- My thought bubble: Coming from a longtime fan, if you have never watched the LLWS, you're missing out. The kids are hilarious, the games are quick and exciting, and they might have better fundamentals than the Rockies at this point.
What's next: North Boulder opens regional play Sunday against Nevada at 10am on ESPN+.
- There will also be a watch party at Outback Saloon, 3141 28th St.
