Lawsuit challenges Aurora police reforms

Driving the news: Belt-Stubblefield's family, attorneys and advocates scheduled a 2pm press conference outside Denver's Alfred A. Arraj United States Courthouse.

The 144-page complaint names Aurora and officer Matthew Neely, whom a grand jury indicted last month on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges.

• Belt-Stubblefield's death was not "an aberration and it was not bad luck," the lawsuit alleges, but the result of a troubled history within the Aurora Police Department.

• The most recent complaint came 36 days before Belt-Stubblefield's death, the lawsuit alleges.

The lawsuit also claims Neely had a reputation within APD for problematic policing and use of force but that concerns about his conduct were not reflected in his official records.

• Belt-Stubblefield's family is seeking unspecified damages for his death, emotional distress and grief.

What they're saying: A city spokesperson said Aurora doesn't comment on pending litigation.
