Castle Rock residents can now stop solicitors with a sign

Driving the news: Castle Rock scrapped its registry last month after the "No-Knock" list ballooned to more than 11,000 addresses — nearly a third of town households.

• Castle Rock clerk Lisa Anderson says the list became too cumbersome to maintain.

How it works: Now, residents can post a "no-soliciting" sign — even a printout — on or near their front door, or pick up a 5-inch sticker through the town's "No-Knock" website.

• Solicitors still need licenses, background checks and badges.

Caveat: They still can leave literature. They just can't knock if a sign is posted.

• Repeat knockers face fines up to $1,000.
• Nonprofits and political campaigns are exempt.

Zoom out: Nearby municipalities handle solicitors differently.

Lone Tree

• Solicitors must register with the city, have a business license and carry their permit.
• Residents can join the "no-soliciting" list; the city then sends a sticker to display.

Parker

• Solicitors must register, get a business license, pass a background check and wear photo ID.
• Residents can join the town's "Do Not Solicit" list; no soliciting signs have the same weight.

Unincorporated Douglas County

• Door-to-door solicitors in unincorporated Douglas County, including Highlands Ranch, must register with the sheriff's office.
• Solicitors pay $15 per card and display a photo ID.
