Arizona Senator John McCain has announced he does not support Gina Haspel's nomination to lead the CIA citing "her role in overseeing the use of torture."
The backdrop: McCain was tortured as a prisoner of war in the Vietnam war. He has been a long opponent of torture and gave a speech on the Senate floor in 2014 against torture practices. During her confirmation hearing today, Haspel said she would "never, ever take the CIA back" to using torture. Following her hearing, Senator Joe Manchin said on Wednesday he would vote to confirm Haspel, setting her up to go to the floor as a bipartisan nominee.
