Cigna, Express Scripts meet federal scrutiny

The Department of Justice has asked Cigna and Express Scripts to hand over more documents as the federal agency conducts an antitrust review of the proposed $52 billion merger.

Why it matters: The DOJ did the same thing for the CVS-Aetna merger, and the move shows that federal regulators are taking an extremely close look at deals that would fundamentally overhaul the health insurance and pharmacy benefits industries. Cigna and Express Scripts still "expect to secure regulatory approval," according to a federal filing.
