Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, plans to meet with Pope Francis to discuss the possibility of stepping down on the heels of growing backlash over his handling of child sexual abuse cases, reports the Washington Post.
The details: In a letter to priests, Wuerl reportedly did not mention whether he will ask Francis to accept his resignation, but said "at issue is how to begin effectively to bring a new level of healing to survivors.” The Post reports that he acknowledged that many in the archdiocese have questioned his ability lead following the shocking Pennsylvania grand jury report last month that detailed decades of systemic sexual abuse by hundreds of Catholic priests in the state.
