Rep. Brett Guthrie wins powerful House Energy and Commerce gavel

Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.) won the race to lead the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee next year, replacing retiring Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.).

Why it matters: The panel's vast jurisdiction positions its chairman to play a lead role in crafting policy on an array of issues: everything from blocking China from engaging in U.S. telecom networks to influencing drug pricing.

Guthrie beat out Rep. Bob Latta (R-Ohio) for the post.
He currently chairs the panel's Subcommittee on Health, while Latta heads the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology.
Both are prolific fundraisers, with Guthrie having a notched a slight edge over Latta this last cycle.

The big picture: The panel is expected to play a vital role in shaping Republicans' budget reconciliation bill, which the party intends to rely on to pass major elements of President-elect Trump's agenda.

Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) was previously seen as a potential chairman candidate but ultimately opted instead for another term heading the House GOP's campaign arm.
