More parents have been approached by federal prosecutors regarding their alleged involvement in the college admissions bribery scandal, creating panic among some elite families within the Los Angeles area, the New York Times reports.

The big picture: Prosecutors overseeing the scandal originally said they were charging 50 people, but are continuing investigations. Parents in the LA area connected with college consultant William Singer are now subject to a waiting game, hiring lawyers in preparation for what's next. Some are contemplating whether to turn themselves in, hopeful to receive more forgiving outcomes.

  • Though no additional indictments have been handed down yet, it's uncertain how many people have been contacted by federal prosecutors. Per the Times, prosecutors have expanded their contacts and requests, issuing subpoenas to gather financial records and call logs, according to 2 defense lawyers representing families involved in the case.
