Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, told Axios' Kim Hart at an Axios event on Thursday that the Trump administration is not doing enough to bridge the skills gap between students and the workforce, and that public education is a huge asset that is not being utilized.

Why it matters: Education Secretary Betsy DeVos proposed a tax credit in support of privatized schools last week. Weingarten, who has been rallying with teachers across the country who have been walking out of classrooms, said it has become increasingly difficult to give students the necessary skills when public education is considered second-best in the Trump administration.
