The NBA reached an agreement with sports data providers Genius Sports and Sportsradar that will let real-time, official NBA stats be used to create in-game betting odds that will be distributed to licensed U.S. sportsbooks, ESPN reports.
Why it matters: This is the first deal of its kind for a major sports league in the United States.
The NBA previously struck a deal with MGM Resorts International, allowing it to use official NBA data on its own betting platform as well as the league's likenesses such as teams and NBA logos.
- Although MGM is the league's exclusive gambling partner for marketing purposes, the data it shares with the company is not exclusive.
Details: Like the NBA's deal with MGM, the data it shares with Sportsradar and Genius Sports is not exclusive. This could be the first of many deals the NBA makes with sports data providers.
