A 26-year-old man died Saturday following a shark attack at a Cape Cod beach in Wellfleet, Massachusetts — the state's first shark attack fatality since 1936, reports the AP.
The big picture: The odds of being attacked and killed by a shark during one's lifetime are 1 in 3,748,067, according to the Florida Museum. To illustrate how exceedingly rare that situation is, the odds of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 5,051 and the odds of dying from a lightning strike are 1 in 79,746.
