New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a speech Wednesday that America "was never that great," the New York Times reports — a remark aimed at President Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan.
Why it matters: Cuomo had been on some lists of possible 2020 Democratic presidential candidates. Marcus Molinaro, the Republican candidate for governor, packaged the clip and said Cuomo "owes the nation an apology." Press secretary Dani Lever clarified his jab in a statement, saying that while the country has always been great, the slogan ignores "the pain so many endured."
The president took to Twitter late Wednesday to respond to Cuomo's claim.
