New industry coalition pushes Trump to back Obama-era climate policy

Some of Washington’s most influential industry trade associations, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, have formed a new advocacy group, launched Monday, urging President Trump to back an Obama-era climate policy.

The details: The coalition, called Let America Lead, focuses on how the policy — a phase-down of heat-trapping chemicals used in appliances like air conditioners — makes America competitive and creates jobs. Climate change isn’t mentioned.

Flashback: The Obama administration helped broker the policy in October 2016 as an amendment to the Montreal Protocol, the 1987 treaty to repair the ozone layer.

The details: The group is a 501(c)(4), which means its donors don’t have to disclose their funding, and that it can be used for political purposes. Its backers include:

  • U.S. Chamber of Commerce
  • National Association of Manufacturers
  • American Chemistry Council
  • American Council for Capital Formation

What’s next: The policy would need to be voted on and approved by the Senate to be enacted, which is also a component of the campaign. But the Trump administration needs to send it to the Senate first.
