Corey Stewart wins Virginia GOP Senate primary

Corey Stewart won the Republican Senate primary race in Virginia, defeating his challenger Nick Freitas. He will face Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine in November.

The big picture: Hillary Clinton won Virginia in 2016 and Democrats won multiple state-level elections in 2017. Both leading GOP candidates weren't guaranteed to win in November. Stewart was fired as Trump's Virginia campaign manager, and Freitas has made controversial comments about mass shootings in the state home to the Virginia Tech shooting.
