Intercom, a maker of software for communicating with customers, has raised $125 million in Series D funding at a valuation of $1.3 billion. Mary Meeker, a general partner at lead investor Kleiner Perkins, will join the startup's board.

Why it matters: This round more than doubles Intercom's funding to date, hinting it's gearing up for a big expansion push.

Keeping it in the family: Two of Kleiner Perkins' managing partners previously led investments in Intercom at other firms—Mamoon Hamid while at Social Capital, and Ilya Fushman while at Index Ventures.

Google Ventures and some existing investors also participated.
