Officials wanted Parkland suspect involuntarily committed in 2016

In September 2016, school officials and a police officer had recommended that Nikolas Cruz, the suspected shooter in last month's Parkland high school massacre that killed 17 people, to be forcibly committed for mental evaluation, per the AP. That recommendation, which was contained in documents filed in Cruz's criminal case, was never carried out.

Why it matters: An involuntary commitment would have made it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for Cruz to legally obtain the AR-15 used in the Parkland shooting, according to the AP. It also confirms that — much like previous reports regarding the FBI's failure to follow up on tips about him — Cruz's erratic behavior was well-known in his school system.
