Inovalon buys Ability Network for $1.2 billion

Inovalon, a health care data analysis company that owns subsidiaries like Avalere Health, is acquiring IT firm Ability Network for $1.2 billion in cash and stock.

Between the lines: Both companies fly under the radar in health care, but they handle a lot of patient data. More than 44,000 health care facilities use Ability's data software, giving Inovalon a large, profitable subsidiary that interacts with providers.
