Defense Secretary Mattis and USMC General Dunford testified before the Armed Services Committee on Tuesday over the proposed FY18 defense budget. It was quickly criticized for its mere 3% increase and Sen. McCaskill called it a "misrepresentation" after President Trump promised "historic increases in defense spending."
Our problem with you is it's a 3% increase over the Obama administration. Everybody agrees that's not enough. -Sen. John McCain
McCain also asked for a better strategy on handling Afghanistan, saying that a winning strategy isn't "a hell of a lot to ask." While Mattis said he plans to have a strategy by mid-July, McCain added: "It makes it hard for us to support you when we don't have a strategy."
