The European Union is moving towards getting free public wifi into unconnected locations around the bloc. A new agreement will provide 120 million euros to "fund equipment for public free Wi-Fi services in 6,000 to 8,000 municipalities" across the E.U. Reuters reports that a further agreement around funding will be necessary for the project.
Key context: Connectivity is a global issue. Bringing internet access to parts of the country that don't already have it — particularly rural and low-income areas — is of interest to both parties in the United States. New FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has said it's a priority of his, as well.
