The city of Rogers will pay for renovations at the 94-year-old Victory Theater.

What's happening: David Hook, facilities manager for the city, tells Axios the work includes:

  • Repointing the brick on the western third of the building and around the stage area on the interior.
  • Repairing damaged wood as well as windows on the front of the building.
  • Repainting all wood and metal on the front of the building.
  • Resealing the brick on the building.

Why it matters: The theater is a historic part of downtown and one of few community theater options in the region.

Details: The City Council on Tuesday approved a $200,000 contract with Mid-Continental Restoration Co. of Fort Scott, Kansas.

Timeline: The project should start in July and last two to three weeks depending on weather and the theater schedule, Hook says.

Of note: The city owns the Victory Theater and acts as a landlord to the nonprofit organization that operates there, Arkansas Public Theatre. APT handles all productions.

Fayetteville is considering cash incentives to encourage people to get the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the city council's agenda.

What's happening: The council will decide Tuesday night whether to establish a program to use federal COVID-19 relief funds to give $100 to anyone who lives or works in Fayetteville who gets fully vaccinated.

Two Canadians imprisoned by the Chinese government for over 1,000 days have been released and are expected to arrive in Canada on Saturday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday.

Why it matters: Their release comes hours after Huawei Technologies CFO Meng Wanzhou reached a deal with the U.S. Department of Justice that resolves the criminal charges against her and could pave the way for her to return to China.

Arizona GOP's private recount of 2020 election confirms Biden's win

In an odd coda to the 2020 election, private contractors conducting a GOP-commissioned recount in Arizona confirmed President Biden’s win in Maricopa County.

Why it matters: The unofficial, party-driven recount has been heavily covered on cable news as part of former President Trump's continued effort to sow doubt about the election result.
