After taking home gold three Olympics in a row, Team USA came up short in the women's eight rowing finals Thursday night.

Driving the news: The U.S. women's team came in fourth. They were bested by Canada, which won gold for the first time in 29 years, while New Zealand claimed silver and China took bronze.

Behind 2021's wave of excellent games

Expand chart
Data: Eurogamer and Axios research; Chart: Thomas Oide/Axios

Gaming publication Eurogamer just awarded its top recommendation — "essential" — to an 11th game this year, equaling the tally for 2020. That’s despite reviewing fewer games and with two months remaining in the year.

Driving the news: That achievement was earned by the captivating virtual card game “Inscryption” and continues a season full of stand-out releases. Many are from smaller studios that are benefitting from an unusual year in games.

Braves hope to win 2nd World Series in 26 years

👋🏽 Hey, y’all. Kristal here.

I grew up watching the Atlanta Braves play on TBS in the 1990s (I loved watching David Justice bat and Ron Gant steal bases), but I don’t claim to be a bona fide baseball analyst.

But this ATLien can’t help but feel elated to see the home team win the National League East and Division and Championship series to advance to the World Series for the first time in more than two decades.

Details: The first pitch of the 2021 World Series begins Tuesday at 8:09pm ET when the Braves take on the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.

  • Single-game tickets to World Series games start selling Tuesday at 10 am, but be prepared to pay an arm and a leg for them. You can also watch Tuesday's game on Fox.
  • Wednesday's game 2 will also be played in Houston before the series comes to Truist Park for Game 3.

Flashback: The last time the Braves won a World Series was in 1995, but the team's most recent appearance was 1999.

  • It was a brutal one for the Braves, as they were swept in four of seven games by the New York Yankees (cementing my disdain for the Yanks).

It hasn’t been all doom and gloom. Since 1999, the team has won 10 divisional titles and made 12 postseason appearances, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

  • We can’t talk about the Braves’ success without mentioning the one and only Bobby Cox, who was the team’s manager from 1978-81 and from 1986 to 2010.

Atlanta, we’ve waited 21 looooong years for this moment. This could be our year! How many games do you think it will take for the Braves to win the series?

Exclusive: Biden administration raises minimum wage for federal employees to $15

Federal agencies are being directed to raise the minimum wages for government employees to $15 an hour, according to new guidance from the Office of Personnel Management shared first with Axios.

Why it matters: The guidance will impact almost 70,000 federal employees, most of which work at the Departments of Agriculture, Defense and Veterans Affairs. OMP is directing agencies to implement the new wage by Jan. 30.
