Data: BLS; Chart: Axios Visuals

The job market added a stunning 531,000 jobs last month. The unemployment rate ticked down to 4.6% — a new pandemic-era low.

Why it matters: America's job market recovery has been on track all along.

Between the lines: Revisions to prior months are often overlooked. Not this month: Upgrades to both August and September were so enormous — fully 366,000 jobs higher than originally reported — that they have definitively reversed the narrative that there was a Delta-induced hiring slump in late summer.

By the numbers: America has now recovered 80% of the jobs lost at the depth of the recession in 2020.

The big picture: Leisure and hospitality added 164,000 jobs last month — but jobs growth was widespread. The disappointment — again — came in public sector education. State and local education shed a combined 65,000 jobs.

  • Wages are still rising: Average hourly earnings rose another 11 cents an hour in October, to $30.96. That's enough to keep up with inflation.

What to watch: Millions of workers remain on the sidelines — and there wasn't much improvement in pulling them back into the workforce.

The bottom line: "The Fall hiccup is now at best a Fall deep breath," tweeted University of Michigan economist Justin Wolfers.

Minimum wage stalls in Pennsylvania as nearby states see increases

Expand chart
Data: NELR/Axios research; Map: Will Chase/Axios

The minimum wage is increasing in a record number of U.S. states in 2022 — but not in Pennsylvania.

  • The state's minimum wage has remained at $7.25 since 2009, when it was raised to meet the federal rate.

The big picture: A total of 25 states and 56 cities will raise their minimum wages by the end of 2022, according to the National Employment Law Project. In many areas, the floor will meet or exceed $15 per hour.

  • Minimum wages are increasing in every state surrounding Pennsylvania, except West Virginia.
  • Pennsylvania is one of 20 states not to raise its minimum wage above the federal rate.

Mapped: Minimum wage increases in Minnesota

Data: NELR/Axios research; Map: Will Chase/Axios

Employers must pay workers in Minneapolis at least $12.50 an hour as of this month, and those with more than 100 employees are required to pay a minimum of $14.25 an hour.

  • The increases, part of a plan to raise wages to $15 an hour, bring the annual pay for 40 hours a week to $25,000 and $28,000 respectively.

Airlines call for Biden admin's "immediate intervention" in 5G deployment

The CEOs of leading U.S. air cargo and passenger carriers on Monday warned the Biden administration there could be "catastrophic disruption" after AT&T and Verizon deploy a new 5G service this week.

Driving the news: They said in a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and other top federal officials ahead of the C-Band 5G service's deployment Wednesday that "the nation's commerce will grind to a halt" and "could potentially strand tens of thousands of Americans overseas."
