Newberger, Housley take victories in Minnesota GOP Senate races

Minnesota state Rep. Jim Newberger and state Sen. Karin Housley on Tuesday advanced to the general election after winning their respective Republican primary races.

The details: Newberger will run against incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is seeking a third term in the Senate. Meanwhile, Housley's special election win has set her up against incumbent Democratic Sen. Tina Smith. The election will decide who will serve the remaining term of embattled Democrat Al Franken, who resigned in January amid a string of sexual misconduct allegations.

Michele Bachmann mulls run for Al Franken's Senate seat

Former Minnesota congresswoman and 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said she is considering a run for Al Franken's Senate seat.

Background: Franken is officially resigning from Congress on Tuesday following a string of sexual misconduct allegations, with Minnesota's Democratic Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to take over the seat on Wednesday. Smith plans to run for the remaining two years of Franken's term in a special election in November.
