The House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot will likely decide this week whether to hold former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows in contempt for failing to appear before the panel, Rep. Adam Schiff told CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.

Catch up quick: Meadows is believed to have insight into former President Trump's role in efforts to stop the certification of President Biden's election win.

  • Meadows is not the first witness to defy a subpoena to appear for a deposition before the select committee. Earlier this month, former Trump adviser Steven Bannon was taken into custody on contempt of Congress charges after defying his own subpoena from the panel.
  • The House would need to vote to refer Meadows to the Department of Justice for criminal contempt.

What he's saying: "I think we will probably make a decision this week on our course of conduct with that particular witness and maybe others," said the California Democrat, who sits on the committee.

  • "[W]e are moving with alacrity with anyone who obstructs the committee, and that was certainly the case with Mr. Bannon and it will be the case with Mr. Meadows, [former Justice Department official Jeffrey] Clark or any others," Schiff added.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Wednesday he will not participate with the Jan. 6 select committee's request to interview him about his communications with former President Trump.

Driving the news: McCarthy, the highest-ranking elected official the panel has asked for information, said that he had nothing to add and criticized the panel's "abuse of power."

LGBTQ+ Afghans have been threatened, attacked and "faced an increasingly desperate situation and grave threats to their safety" since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan last August, per a report published Wednesday.

What they're saying: "We spoke with LGBT Afghans who have survived gang rape, mob attacks, or have been hunted by their own family members who joined the Taliban, and they have no hope that state institutions will protect them," per a statement from study co-author J. Lester Feder.

Indigenous leaders in Canada's western province of British Columbia said Tuesday they believe they've found 93 unmarked graves near a former boarding school.

The big picture: Hundreds of mass graves have been found at the grounds of former residential schools for Indigenous children since last May, when the remains of 215 children were uncovered at one such site in B.C.
