John McCain's 2008 presidential running mate, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (R), was not invited to attend the late Arizona senator’s funeral services this week, per NBC News.
A source close to the Palin family told NBC’s Kelly O'Donnell "out of respect to Senator McCain and his family we have nothing to add at this point." Following McCain’s death, Palin wrote in a tweet "John McCain was my friend. I will remember the good times. My family and I send prayers for Cindy and the McCain family."
The big picture: Palin joins President Trump on the list of those excluded from the funeral. McCain said back in May he did not want Trump in attendance.
Flashback: The New York Times reported earlier this year that McCain said he regretted choosing Palin as his running mate over then Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT). In response, Palin told the Daily Mail it’s a “perpetual gut punch” to hear reports of McCain’s regret.
