White House was considering promotion for Porter before resignation

Former White House Staff Secretary Rob Porter was being considered for a promotion, perhaps to deputy chief of staff, before he resigned last week due to domestic abuse allegations, CNN reports. Axios' Jonathan Swan confirmed that reporting, stating that Porter was in the running earlier this year for "a policy-overseeing role," perhaps with the title of "deputy chief of staff for policy."

Why it matters: Following FBI Director Christopher Wray's revelation that the FBI had already finished its background checks on Porter last year — throwing a wrench into the White House's public timeline — this is more bad news for the administration's handling of the Porter allegations.
