U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said Monday that the protective fence that was put in place around the Capitol following the Jan. 6 riot will be reinstalled ahead of a rally scheduled for Sept. 18.

Driving the news: Law enforcement has been "closely monitoring" the rally, which is planned in support of individuals arrested for storming the Capitol in January.

  • While police are tracking several far-right groups that attended the Jan. 6 riots, Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio has said he does not expect group members to attend, AP reports.

Details: The streets around the Capitol and the Supreme Court will be fenced, but not the nearby congressional buildings.

What they're saying: "The fence will go up a day or two before, and if everything goes well, it will come down very soon after," Manger said.

  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said after a briefing that "they seemed very, very well-prepared. Much better prepared than before Jan. 6. I think they're ready for whatever might happen."

What to watch: Manger said the USCP will do a press briefing "a day or two" before the rally with more operational details.

The Florida man who paraded around the Capitol on Jan. 6 with Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) lectern pleaded guilty on Monday to entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, the Washington Post reports.

Driving the news: Under the plea deal, prosecutors have agreed to toss out charges related to theft of government property and violent entry on Capitol grounds.

Federal court blocks Biden's vaccine mandate for health workers in 10 states

A federal court in Missouri has blocked the Biden administration from enforcing a coronavirus vaccine mandate for health care workers at federally funded facilities in 10 states.

Why it matters: Monday's decision is the first victory for opponents of the rule, which requires health care workers to get vaccinated by Jan. 4, 2022. The case is one of four lawsuits challenging the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) rule and argues that the mandate will exacerbate staffing shortages.

Twitter's next act

Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey is exiting the company he helped build at a time when its future has never been so uncertain.

Why it matters: The person who controls Twitter controls the de facto public square — with implications for politics, media and free speech.
