1 big thing: McConnell looks ahead to 2018

I sat down this morning with Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) to talk tax reform, their 2018 agendas and the Russia probe.

Highlights from McConnell:

  • Entitlements and welfare reform aren't on his 2018 agenda: "We have to have Democratic involvement. So things like do something in that area we're going to have to have Democratic participation."
  • He defended tax reform: "If I were running the campaign…I'd have that single woman saying, Sen. [Joe] Manchin, maybe $1,300 isn't much to you, but it is to me..."
  • He talked a little Trump: "You know, he likes to talk. He's talking to members all the time. I talk to him all the time. You'll get phone calls at the oddest hours."
  • He doesn't love Trump's tweets, but: "I like the tweet he sent out about me yesterday, so there are exceptions."
  • And he opposes candidates "who have no chance to win," like those floated by Steve Bannon.

3. 1 fun thing: the snowshoe artist

"Simon Beck is a snow artist who creates huge designs in the snow by simply walking in a pair of snowshoes. He believes that inspiration goes before motivation, and nature's perfect patterns inspire him to create something new every time out. This short documentary by Flash Studio follows Beck's preparations for a piece he did in Stryn, Norway, on a day of good snow. Watch and join him as he catches a first glimpse of a masterpiece that, after many steps and calculations, would most likely be covered in two days."
