โš–๏ธ It's Tuesday. On this day in 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court listened to arguments over Zelman v. Simmons-Harris.

  • The case involved Ohio's school voucher program for kids in the Cleveland public school system to attend private schools.

1 big thing: Your 2024 Senate primary primer

The 2024 primary election in Ohio is less than a month away, with today marking the deadline to register to vote and with early voting starting tomorrow.

Why it matters: Beyond the presidential race and local contests, voters will decide which Republican will challenge Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown in the general election for U.S. Senate.

Catch up quick: Brown has been a senator since 2007. He chairs the Senate Banking Committee and has long been a staunch defender of American workers in the face of international trade agreements.

  • Three Republicans โ€” Matt Dolan, Frank LaRose and Bernie Moreno โ€” are hoping to defeat Brown in the fall.

Between the lines: Moreno and Dolan unsuccessfully ran for the Senate seat in 2022, losing to Republican J.D. Vance, who was carried to victory by an endorsement from former President Trump.

  • Both Moreno and LaRose have courted Trump's favor, but Trump threw his support to Moreno this year.

Meet the candidates:

Dolan has been a state senator since 2017, representing Cleveland's southern and western suburbs.

  • Dolan, the son of Cleveland Guardians owner Larry Dolan, is regarded as the most moderate of the three candidates. He touts his commonsense conservatism, which he argues has led to effective bipartisan legislating and prosperity for Ohioans.

LaRose is the Ohio Secretary of State.

  • LaRose, a military veteran and former state senator, led the failed effort to make it harder to amend the Ohio Constitution last year and campaigned against the successful abortion rights amendment, defeats he holds up as evidence of his willingness to stand on principle, even when winning isn't guaranteed.

Moreno is a former luxury car dealer and Northeast Ohio entrepreneur.

The other side: Brown waits in the wings with ample resources. He raised $6.6 million in the most recent reporting period, more than triple what his challengers raised combined.

  • Brown's campaign said it had $14.6 million cash on hand at the end of last year.

Yes, but: Among the 2024 U.S. Senate races, Ohio is one of the GOP's top targets, as Republicans see an opportunity to pick up a seat, and deep-pocketed political action committees are preparing enormous advertising buys.

4. Brews on Tues: ๐Ÿป Hansa!

๐Ÿ‘‹ Sam here, sampling our fine city's beer offerings, as I do.

Brewery of the week: Hansa Brewery, a little taste of Eastern Europe in Ohio City.

State of the play: Opening in 2016 adjacent to imported foods store Hansa House at West 28th Street and Lorain Avenue, the brewpub features European cuisine and traditional craft beers in a modern urban chalet environment.

Vibe check: Bright and subdued, with a long, living-edge wooden bar, a flag of Slovenia over the doorway, and decor dominated by European imagery and St. Ignatius athletic memorabilia.

What I drank: A flight of Hansa staples, including the Femdom Kรถlsch (4.8%), the Black Flag Schwarzbier (4.7%), the No Fox Pilsner (4.2%) and a cold IPA collaboration with Bookhouse Brewery (6.5%).

  • Plus: The bartender โ€” who doubles as a travel agent โ€” was keen to show off "Merry Christmas, Ya Filthy Animal," the potent Christmas ale brewed with honey and maple syrup instead of sugar.

Verdict: Beer quality is through the roof, but Hansa feels more suitable for a dinner with parents than a night of carousing.
