1 big thing: 🏟 Shiver me timbers

The Panthers announced Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales as their new head coach Thursday night.

Why it matters: Canales is known for improving quarterbacks, Axios' Ashley Mahoney writes. Now it's time to see if he can bring an entire organization back to life.

  • The hope is Canales can help last year's No. 1 overall pick, quarterback Bryce Young, succeed in Carolina after a rocky rookie season when the team went 2-15.

2. πŸ’Š The fentanyl talk

Free Narcan nasal spray is sometimes offered in vending machines. Photo: Scott Olson/Getty Images

Traces of fentanyl, a deadly substance, are being found in almost every illegal drug seized nowadays, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say.

  • That includes marijuana, as well as in fake Xanax or Percocets, Axios' Alex Sands writes.
  • Just two milligrams of fentanyl β€” small enough to fit on a pencil tip β€” can be lethal.

Why it matters: Addicts and experimenting teens alike are unknowingly taking this cheap and potentially lethal drug. Because fentanyl is so accessible and addictive, dealers routinely mix it into their products to increase profits.

Driving the news: This week, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education approved a plan to allow more school staff to administer naloxone, a lifesaving opioid overdose-reversal medication.

Here are some tips on how to talk to your child about fentanyl

πŸ’ Her thought bubble: I loved the walk-in closet, which leads to a loft and additional closet space. I'll probably dream about the movie room. Also, built-in Bluetooth speakers throughout the house are something I didn't know I needed.
