Ode to Bridging Tampa Bay by St. Pete reader Donna Parrey

A bridge is meant to help connect

two places set apart,

to bring together east and west

so they might share a heart.

But Tampa and St. Petersburg

have yet to get this right.

Their bridges only separate –

divide, to be polite.

Tampa has its Riverwalk

and historic Ybor City.

St. Pete has world-class museums

and a water front so pretty.

Sports teams on both sides of the bay

have fans that want to gather.

But residents on either side

say crossing the bridge is a bother.

So though the region shares a name,

the connection still is weak,

until we up our transportation game

with options that residents seek.

Rail or trolley, ferry or 'el'

that can get us there and back,

could help to give our Tampa Bay

the connection that we lack.
