Second gentleman Douglas Emhoff and Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall on Friday announced new federal funding to help reduce lead exposure from the city's drinking water system.

Why it matters: Aging infrastructure is a threat to clean drinking water, Emhoff told reporters.

  • The treatment plant in City Creek Canyon was the first municipal water treatment plant established west of the Mississippi River, according to Mendenhall.

What's next: The city will receive a $39 million loan to replace 9,000 to 14,000 lead service lines.
