Monday Munchies: Pie alert in Bentonville

Alex here. I'm delighted to tell you that Northwest Arkansas has a new bakery. And this one specializes in pies.

The vibe: Piehouse Bakery in Bentonville is going for — and succeeding at — being an old-fashioned bakery where one can grab pies, cake and other baked goods to go or sit in a homey café with rolling pins hanging from the ceiling while sipping coffee with a tasty dessert or savory breakfast picks like quiche.

Piehouse sells more than 20 kinds of pies whole ($29) or by the slice ($6.50).

My thought bubble: I don't always need a whole pie or cake. I'm more likely to find a use for one slice, and I'm betting many of my fellow sweet tooths feel the same way. Nice to see a place that lets us enjoy dessert whenever we want.

  • The blueberry was clearly a high-quality dessert made by someone who gets pie. Whole blueberries in that thing. My only regret was not adding a scoop of ice cream.

Yes, but: Whole pies in all the classic flavors are made for the busy people of the world who said they'd bring dessert. No one is going to complain that you didn't make it yourself.

Zoom out: Pie may be its hook, but this place is much more than one medium of desserts. I actually got the pie to go and sat down for a late-morning jalapeno cheddar scone — a melt-in-your-mouth breakfast treat for those who don't do sugar before noon.

  • I also took home a slice of roasted butternut squash-and-spinach quiche and would do it again.

The intrigue: Piehouse also has sugar-free desserts. Maybe next time.

Stop by: 7am-3pm Tuesday-Saturday at 310 S. Walton Blvd. in Bentonville.
