Pressroom, a downtown Bentonville restaurant owned by Steuart and Tom Walton's Ropeswing, suddenly closed for business Monday, the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal reported.

Driving the news:
At least some employees were caught off guard and took to social media with complaints.

  • One former employee started a Gofundme page to help co-workers with families.

The big picture: Bentonville-based Ropeswing is the hospitality arm of the Runway Group.

  • Ropeswing operates eight other restaurants, bars or venues in Bentonville, including Preacher's Son, Lady Slipper and Record.

What they're saying: "All current Ropeswing hourly and salaried employees are being offered a severance package," a spokesperson replied in an email.

  • The spokesperson did not respond to a question about employees being offered jobs at other Ropeswing properties.

The intrigue: The company has 15 open positions.

The bottom line: "In the restaurant and hospitality world, new concepts are always appearing, and this decision is simply a reflection of that," the spokesperson wrote.

  • "A brand new vibe will fill this space" reads part of a note posted on Pressroom's door; it's not clear if that means a restaurant.
