The Justice Department is creating a carjacking task force in New Orleans and six other cities.

Why it matters: Carjackings have a "toxic toll on our communities," says Lyonel Myrthil, the special agent in charge of FBI New Orleans.

The big picture: The U.S. Attorney's Office, the FBI and ATF will lead the task force.

  • They will "work alongside" state and local law enforcement partners, DOJ says.

Zoom in: The task force will also help officials who want federal grant funding for juvenile intervention resources, DOJ's press release says.

Zoom out: There are five other task forces already, and the FBI says they have seen "major results."

  • In addition to New Orleans, the new task forces will be in Oregon, Texas, Alabama, California, Mississippi and Washington.

Worth noting: Carjackings are down 46.4% year over year, according to the city's crime dashboard.
