While it might seem like Miami has had a colder-than-usual winter — the city is again expecting colder winds and dropping temperatures this week, according to the Miami Herald — it has yet to experience a weather day under 50 degrees.

The intrigue: Thanks to the El Niño weather pattern, Miami has experienced a lot more cloud cover so far this year, Sammy Hadi, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Miami, tells Axios.

  • There's also been more cold patterns coming through. That, coupled with increased cloudiness, results in temperatures feeling more comfortable and cool during the day but warmer overnight, he says.

By the numbers: So far this year, the average temperature recorded at Miami International Airport has been 77.6 degrees, slightly above the 76.4-degree average.

  • The lowest temperature recorded at the airport was 52 degrees, according to NWS in Miami.

Bottom line: Temperatures this year have felt cooler, but looking at historical records, this winter season is still a bit warmer than average.
